Uptown Bonifacio: Where Retail, Culture, and Community Come Together | In a retail landscape where convenience is increasingly just a click away, the destinations that truly stand out are those that give people a reason to come together.

For Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, that vision comes to life at Uptown Bonifacio, where retail is not simply about shopping, but about creating a vibrant, connected environment where people can live, work, dine, discover, celebrate, and belong.

This vision has earned Uptown Bonifacio the 2026 OFR Shopping Center of the Year – Medium, a recognition that affirms its continuing evolution as an experience-led destination and celebrates the collective efforts of the teams, frontliners, retailers, and community partners who bring the township to life.

Beyond the traditional mall

Uptown Bonifacio was envisioned as a complete urban township—bringing together residences, offices, retail, dining, entertainment, and public spaces within a walkable district. Retail serves as an important part of this ecosystem, giving the township much of its social energy and creating spaces where residents, professionals and visitors naturally converge.

Today, that experience has grown richer and more diverse.

Global names such as Tesla, MUJI, H&M, Foot Locker, Jo Malone and Pandora share the landscape with established and emerging Filipino brands. Its dining scene has likewise become a destination, bringing together international concepts such as Morton’s The Steakhouse and Hikiniku To Come with chef-driven restaurants including Mamou, Moderna, Singular, Los Tacos and Mijo Reserva.

Yet Uptown’s greatest strength may be its ability to welcome different communities throughout the day—from residents and office workers to families, shoppers, wellness communities and the nightlife crowd. Rather than serving a single type of customer, Uptown creates an environment where different lifestyles can coexist and intersect.

Creating reasons to stay, discover and return

At Uptown Bonifacio, shopping, dining, entertainment and culture are deliberately connected.

A visit that begins with shopping can naturally lead to a meal, an event, an exhibit, a wellness activity or an evening at Uptown Parade. Open promenades, alfresco spaces and a strong day-to-night dining and entertainment scene encourage visitors to explore beyond a single destination or purpose.

That experience is increasingly important in a digital-first world.

Online platforms can provide convenience, but they cannot fully reproduce the excitement of discovering a new restaurant, experiencing a live event, meeting friends or simply being part of the energy of a place. Physical destinations must therefore offer something beyond transactions—and Uptown embraces discovery, interaction and shared experiences as essential parts of modern retail.

Equally important is the role of Filipino enterprise in shaping that experience. Brands such as Bench, Regatta, Plains & Prints, Bocu, Sunnies, Issy & Co. and Happy Skin contribute local identity and creativity, while platforms such as Roots Collective, seasonal pop-ups and other initiatives provide opportunities for MSMEs and independent designers to gain visibility within a premium retail environment.

The result is a retail mix where established global and local names provide familiarity and credibility, while emerging businesses bring fresh ideas and new reasons to explore.

Innovation with purpose

Uptown also demonstrates how innovation can transform familiar retail spaces into destinations in their own right.

From the country’s first premium bed-seating cinema format at Uptown Tempur Cinema to Uptown Ultra Cinema, the Scenic 3D LED and its signature fire-and-water fountain, technology, design and entertainment work together to create experiences that customers can remember and share.

Sustainability is likewise integrated into the township experience. Open promenades, landscaped spaces, pedestrian-oriented streets and alfresco areas encourage walking and outdoor activity, while energy-efficient systems and 100% renewable energy across its offices and lifestyle malls support more responsible operations. EV charging stations, Tesla Superchargers and bike facilities further encourage cleaner mobility.

Powered by people and community

Behind every experience is a culture of listening and collaboration.

Uptown’s customer-first approach draws heavily on the insights of frontliners and customer feedback, using these perspectives to identify pain points and continually improve services, facilities and programs.

This collaborative spirit extends across estate management, mall operations, marketing, security, frontliners, retailers and community partners. The Uptown Bonifacio Run Club, for example, brings these groups together in a recurring community experience where residents and customers participate while mall partners and retailers engage through activations and offers.

This is ultimately what the 2026 OFR Shopping Center of the Year recognition celebrates: not simply a successful retail property, but a destination that continues to evolve with its community.

As Megaworld Lifestyle Malls looks ahead, Uptown Bonifacio envisions an even more connected future, supported by an evolving mix of retail, dining, entertainment, wellness and community experiences, as well as improved mobility through the upcoming Kalayaan Avenue Station of the Metro Manila Subway.

The mall of the future, after all, will not simply be a place to shop. It will be a seamlessly integrated part of everyday life.

And at Uptown Bonifacio, that future is already taking shape.

As primary Western markets experience growing regulatory hurdles, power grid strain, and physical land limits, economic zone regimes present a pre-industrialized solution to meet the explosive demand for digital infrastructure.

The global data center market currently operates around 10,000 facilities worldwide, with total capacity projected to double within the next five years. However, traditional tech hubs are reaching critical capacity caps.

A global bottleneck creates a regional opening

In the United States, 30 states have passed measures restricting data center development due to public grid pushback and environmental considerations. Tier-1 regional hubs like Singapore have similarly faced physical and energy constraints, forcing global operators to seek alternative, high-growth destinations across the Asia Pacific region.

According to WTCA, this global supply bottleneck creates a direct opportunity for Philippine ecozone developers and operator hubs across key growth corridors like Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, and Clark to capture high-value digital foreign direct investment (FDI).

With PEZA already hosting over 290 IT parks and specialized centers nationwide, the sector has emerged as a major economic pillar, attracting multi-billion-peso digital infrastructure pipelines from global hyperscalers. That footprint continues to grow. In July 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Administrative Order 45, lifting a seven-year moratorium on new IT park and IT center applications in Metro Manila. Within days, five Metro Manila developments had applied for ecozone status, an early signal of how quickly developers are positioning themselves to capture the opportunity.

“Data centers make up essential infrastructure for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital commerce, and the broader digital economy,” said Scott Wang, WTCA Vice President, Asia Pacific. “They also represent a rapidly growing real estate and investment opportunity. Free Zones that can provide the right combination of infrastructure, incentives, and investment support are exceptionally well-positioned to attract this global industry.”

A tri-ecosystem approach to de-risking investment

To bridge international capital with local sites, WTCA highlights a “tri-ecosystem” approach. By uniting the global access network and international credibility of the World Trade Center (WTC) brand with the fiscal incentives of economic zones and ready infrastructure, developers can de-risk hyperscale projects for international clients.

The three elements work together to sharpen returns as much as they reduce risk. The WTCA network connects developers directly to hyperscalers and capital sources, free zone incentives lower construction and equipment costs, and ready infrastructure shortens time to deployment. The WTC brand itself also carries a market premium, reflecting the added value international credibility brings to an investment.

The highest-value real estate play

For Philippine property leaders and ecozone operators, this shift marks a significant evolution in industrial real estate. Beyond traditional IT-BPO office spaces and standard logistics warehouses, data centers offer developers the highest value-added return per square meter.

During the recent WTC Free Zones webinar “Unlocking Data Center Investment: The Role of the WTCA network in Connecting Free Zones and Developers,” speakers discussed how Free Zones can position themselves as investment-ready destinations for data center developers and operators, and how WTCA Members can play an active role as connectors, facilitators and partners in that investment journey.

WTCA Free Zones Go Global

“In terms of return, a data center is fundamentally a real estate play,” said Martín Gustavo Ibarra, President and CEO of Araújo Ibarra International Business Consultants — WTCA’s partner organization behind the “Free Zones Go Global” initiative. “Data centers are a real estate business with the most concentrated value-added per square foot. When a city has a good data center system, it connects that city to the world and attracts high-value service industries like AI, fintech, cloud, and BPO.”

Built to deploy at scale

Modern AI workloads are driving facility requirements from legacy sizes to massive 200-megawatt and gigawatt-scale deployments, requiring immediate access to industrial land, pre-secured utility hookups, and underground fiber routes. Readiness varies by corridor, and power capacity in particular remains an active focus of government and private investment as Philippine zones compete for these larger, hyperscale-level deployments.

In the Philippines, World Trade Center Metro Manila (WTCMM) represents the local footprint of this global network. As WTCMM marks 30 years since opening in 1996, the organization is looking at how that network can extend beyond its Metro Manila home to support emerging economic zone opportunities. “As WTCMM marks 30 years of connecting the Philippines to global trade, we’re keeping a close watch on how the WTCA network could support Philippine economic zones as this next wave of investment takes shape,” said Pamela D. Pascual, Chairman and CEO of WTCMM, and WTCA Board Director.

Through its global network spanning over 300 WTC locations in nearly 100 countries and territories, WTCA continues to facilitate cross-border partnerships, connecting international technology firms, hyperscale developers, and capital sources with qualified economic zones worldwide.

37th Philippine Travel Mart opens, calls on travelers to ‘discover the Philippines beyond the familiar’ | MANILA, Philippines — Heavy thunderstorms did not stop guests from filling the halls of SMX Convention Center on Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, to explore over 310 booths and major deals at the Philippine Tour Operators Association’s (Philtoa) 37th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM), which officially opened this week under the theme “Nurturing the NextGen Tourism: Discover Your Philippines,” with tourism officials and industry leaders calling on Filipinos to look past the country’s most familiar attractions and explore its emerging destinations, communities, and culture.

From food to textiles, local handicrafts, and offbeat destinations, this year’s PTM once again takes travelers on an instant tour of the Philippines, where one can sample the best of the different regions’ offerings, and help them plan their next travel itineraries that will take them beyond the usual tourist spots.

”Today, people are looking beyond the usual attractions. They want to meet local people, taste local food, and experience a destination in a more personal way,” said Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay in her opening remarks.

The event is Philtoa’s third installment of PTM’s “NextGen Tourism” series, launched in 2024 with the theme “Love the NextGen Tourism” alongside the DOT’s “Love the Philippines” campaign. In 2025 with a push toward turning industry mindset into action, PTM’s theme was “Boosting the NextGen Tourism,” and this year’s edition builds on that momentum that is supported by four pillars: digitalization, sustainability, inclusivity, and health and wellness.

Philtoa president Maria Lourdes Japson encouraged PTM visitors to explore this year’s booths to avail themselves of the deals exclusive to the three-day fair—airfare and hotel discounts unique to the event.

With the participation of DOT regional offices from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, PTM is guaranteed to be a “truly national” affair, said Japson, and provides everyone a taste of what the entire Philippines has to offer. The Capiz booth, for one, provides a high-tech visual exploration of their province through the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Over in the Cordilleras booth, one is educated on and gets a free taste of the different kinds of coffee they grow. The Calabarzon booth trains the spotlight on pet-friendly destinations, for travelers who like taking their fur babies on vacation with them.

“PTM is where people meet our markets, where destinations meet buyers, where stories meet opportunities,” Japson said.

Building an industry for the next generation

Tourism Secretary Angara-Mathay also highlighted how Philtoa, through PTM, is a key partner in shaping the Philippines’ tourism industry to not just become bigger but better—pointing to a shift in traveler behavior toward more personal, community-based experiences.

She cited several initiatives under the Philippine Experience Program designed around that shift, including “The Secret Kitchens of Samar,” which she said lets visitors discover heirloom recipes and the family stories behind them, and a slow-food movement in Negros built around producers, cooks, and their communities. She also pointed to community-based weaving programs in Kalinga, Lake Sebu, and Zamboanga, where visitors “don’t just buy the fabric” but learn directly from the weavers who make it.

Angara-Mathay tied the push to diaspora tourism as well, saying the department wants overseas Filipinos to “come not just for the grass, but with a deeper connection to who we are” — journeys she said also create livelihoods for local artisans, farmers, cooks, guides, and transport providers.

A legacy handed to the next generation

Japson traced PTM’s roots to its founding under the then-Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC), which later evolved into the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) before the fair found its current home with PHILTOA.

With this year’s theme, PTM is also a call for Philtoa and the rest of the tourism industry to build on nearly four decades of groundwork. “Every generation has a responsibility to build on what the previous generation started, and to prepare the next generation to take it even further,” she said.

The 37th Philippine Travel Mart is presented by the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Promotions Board Philippines. It runs from September 4 to 6, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

APAC — As cybersecurity teams increasingly turn to artificial intelligence to manage growing security demands, Tenable is taking a collaborative approach to the challenge with the launch of the CyberAgents Exchange, an open-source platform designed to help security practitioners discover, share, and develop trusted AI-powered security components.

Powered by Tenable, the CyberAgents Exchange is positioned as a vendor-agnostic, cybersecurity-focused registry for AI agents, skills, MCP servers and multi-agent playbooks. The initiative aims to address a growing problem across the industry: security teams developing AI tools independently, often duplicating efforts and working within isolated or vendor-controlled environments.

Building a More Collaborative Cybersecurity Community

The CyberAgents Exchange is designed to break down those silos by creating a free-to-use environment where cybersecurity professionals can share and build agentic AI tools.

Trust and transparency are central to the platform. Users can access code-level information about an AI component, including who created it, when it was developed and whether it has received peer support. This gives security teams greater visibility as they evaluate and deploy components for their own environments.

The platform could also serve as a professional development resource, allowing practitioners to demonstrate experience with emerging AI technologies while building a portfolio of peer-supported security components.

For Seth Fogie, Director of Security at Baptist Memorial Health Care, the collaborative nature of the initiative is particularly important.

“The CyberAgents Exchange fills a major and pressing industry need, especially as cybersecurity remains a growing issue and AI-enabled attacks rise,” said Fogie. “Its core philosophy of working together is what made the threat intelligence community so invaluable. My team has benefited greatly from the Exchange, and we look forward to contributing and collaborating with the wider community.”

Industry Leaders Join as Founding Members

The initiative is also gaining support from established cybersecurity companies.

SentinelOne and Recorded Future have joined the CyberAgents Exchange as founding members, bringing expertise in autonomous security operations and threat intelligence to the emerging ecosystem. Both organizations are expected to contribute AI agents, integration frameworks and playbooks aimed at strengthening collective defenses against evolving AI-driven threats.

The launch also coincides with “SWARM: The Cybersecurity Agentic AI Build Event,” a hands-on, multi-day event taking place during Black Hat USA 2026. Sponsored by AWS and presented with support from Anthropic, the event gives security practitioners an opportunity to develop open-source security agents, skill files and MCP servers.

More Than 50 AI Components Already Available

The CyberAgents Exchange launches with more than 50 open-source AI components, giving security teams a starting point for experimenting with agentic cybersecurity workflows.

Among them is Navi, an agent that uses Tenable One Vulnerability Management APIs to automate common vulnerability-management and cyber-exposure workflows.

The Exchange also includes SentinelOne Purple AI, an MCP server that allows users to access SentinelOne services through an MCP client; Recorded Future MITRE APT Attack Path Analysis, which combines threat intelligence with Tenable findings to identify potentially exploitable attack-path nodes; and SOC-Hunter, a skill used by Tenable’s own security operations team for proactive, hypothesis-driven threat hunting.

Another offering, The Hounds Pack, provides a skill-packaged playbook built around 18 exposure-management specialists designed to hunt, tag and calibrate risk.

“Security Is a Team Sport”

For Tenable Chief Technology Officer Vlad Korsunsky, the initiative reflects a fundamental principle of cybersecurity: organizations are stronger when they work together.

“Security is a team sport. We’ve addressed a gaping hole in the ecosystem of AI Agents, built for defenders, by defenders. With the CyberAgents Exchange, we’re creating a collaborative ‘town square’ where cybersecurity practitioners can build, test, improve and share the best in agentic defense,” said Korsunsky.

He added that Tenable’s experience in open source, combined with its global customer and partner ecosystem, puts the company in a strong position to help develop the initiative and expand the capabilities of security teams.

SentinelOne also sees open collaboration as increasingly important as cyber threats become more autonomous.

“To truly scale defenses against autonomous, AI-driven threats, the security community must move past isolated development and vendor-locked silos,” said Braden Preston, vice president of product management, SentinelOne.

Recorded Future likewise emphasized that intelligence and trust need to remain at the heart of autonomous cybersecurity.

“Joining the CyberAgents Exchange as a founding member lets us bring world-class threat intelligence directly into the open-source frameworks security teams are building today,” said Jamie Zajac, Chief Product Officer at Recorded Future. “But the promise of AI agents in security depends entirely on whether they can be trusted.”

An Open Invitation to the Cybersecurity Community

The CyberAgents Exchange is available as a free, open-source community, with no fees for listing or using agents. The model is deliberately designed to encourage participation from security practitioners, technology companies and other members of the cybersecurity community.

As AI increasingly becomes part of both offensive and defensive cybersecurity, the industry’s challenge is moving beyond simply developing smarter tools. The bigger question is how those tools can be made trusted, transparent, reusable and collaborative.

Tenable’s CyberAgents Exchange represents one attempt to answer that challenge: rather than having every security team build its own AI capabilities from scratch, practitioners can contribute to a shared ecosystem where ideas, components and expertise can move faster.

In an environment where cyber threats themselves are becoming increasingly AI-enabled, collaboration may prove to be one of the industry’s most important defenses.

Happiest Pinoy Wins Stevie® for Celebrating the Strength of the Filipino Spirit | Happiest Pinoy, Cebuana Lhuillier’s flagship advocacy celebrating Filipino resilience, optimism, and joy, has been named a Bronze Stevie® Winner for Achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility at the 23rd Annual International Business Awards®. Known as the “International Stevies,” the awards are among the world’s major business honors, drawing more than 3,400 nominations from organizations across 82 nations and territories. More than 210 professionals evaluated winners across 11 specialized judging panels.

For Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, the recognition underscores the role of optimism in creating meaningful social impact. “Happiest Pinoy was built on a simple belief: that optimism is not just a mindset, but a powerful force that can shape communities and inspire action. By celebrating the everyday ways Filipinos choose hope and happiness, we hope to spark a ripple effect, one that encourages more people to lift each other up and see the possibilities ahead.”

The 2025 search drew more than 500,000 entries nationwide, expanding its categories to celebrate the many faces of Filipino joy—from upbeat Gen Zs and inspiring seniors to persons with disabilities, OFWs, entrepreneurs, artists, Indigenous communities, LGBTQIA+ advocates, and everyday Ka-Cebuanas whose stories show that happiness can be found in every generation, community, and walk of life.

Happiest Pinoy also moved beyond a traditional competition through a nationwide roadshow that brought the advocacy directly to communities. Cebuana Lhuillier engaged student leaders, school heads, local tourism champions, media partners, local government representatives, and marginalized sectors, widening participation and creating opportunities for more Filipinos to share their stories. Entries were accepted online, through video, and at Cebuana Lhuillier branches, making the search accessible to Filipinos across the country.

A distinguished panel of judges from government, business, sports, media, and social development brought together diverse experiences and perspectives on overcoming challenges and making a difference in others’ lives. Together, they assessed the finalists not only for their resilience and optimism, but also for the impact, authenticity, and purpose behind their stories.

Zacarias Mansing Jr., a literacy and disability inclusion advocate, emerged as the overall winner from among 10 national category winners, taking home the ₱500,000 grand prize. After an accident left him paralyzed, Mansing transformed his experience into a mission to advance literacy and disability inclusion, reaching more than 50,000 students across 300 remote public schools in Negros Oriental through his Books for Kids Project.

The advocacy has recently expanded into the digital space through #SimpleJoysPH, turning the celebration of happiness into an ongoing movement that can be experienced and shared year-round. Across online platforms, people celebrate the moments that make life meaningful like family milestones and personal wins to simple acts of kindness. Building on the spirit of Happiest Pinoy, #SimpleJoysPH takes the celebration beyond the annual competition, creating more ways to express and inspire everyday joy through meaningful stories, a songwriting contest, and a dance challenge.

The Bronze Stevie® recognizes Happiest Pinoy’s evolution from an annual search into a broader advocacy, one that continues to reach more Filipinos, amplify stories of strength and purpose, and celebrate the everyday optimism that makes the Filipino spirit shine.

Nurturing Future Industry Leaders

The MOU signing was attended by key leaders from both organizations, including PRSP Trustee and Chair of Student Caravan and Grand Prix Steve Michael M. Moore Jr., alongside Globe executives.

The Rise of the One-Person Business: How AI Is Creating Micro-Companies | There was a time when starting a business meant building a team before you could build the business.

You needed someone to design the logo, another person to manage social media, somebody to write proposals, someone to answer customers, an accountant to organize the books, and perhaps a researcher to help you understand the market.

Today, one entrepreneur can potentially do much of that work with the help of artificial intelligence or AI.

This is creating a new kind of business: the one-person company, or what we might call the micro-company—a small enterprise powered by one entrepreneur, digital tools and increasingly capable AI assistants.

For Filipino entrepreneurs, freelancers and aspiring business owners, this could be one of the most important opportunities of the next few years.

The question is no longer simply, “How many people can I hire?”

It is becoming:

“How much can one person accomplish with the right technology?”

One Entrepreneur, Many Capabilities

Imagine a small business owner launching a new product.

In the past, creating the marketing campaign could require a marketing person. Designing promotional materials might require a graphic designer. Writing social-media content could require a copywriter. Researching competitors might require another employee.

Today, AI tools can assist the entrepreneur with many of these tasks.

AI can help brainstorm campaign ideas, draft content, organize research, create design concepts, analyze customer feedback and prepare marketing materials. It can assist with customer-service responses, summarize documents, prepare sales proposals and help organize information for business decisions.

That does not mean the entrepreneur suddenly becomes an expert in everything.

Rather, AI can give one person access to capabilities that previously required a small team.

The entrepreneur remains responsible for judgment, quality, relationships and final decisions.

That distinction is important.

AI can produce an answer. The business owner still has to decide whether it is the right answer.

From Freelancer to Micro-Company

This technology is particularly interesting for people who already sell their skills.

A freelance writer can use AI to research topics, organize ideas and handle more projects.

A graphic designer can use AI-assisted tools to explore concepts faster.

A social-media specialist can manage more accounts.

A web developer can speed up routine tasks.

A consultant can research industries and prepare presentations more efficiently.

Instead of simply selling hours, these professionals can begin building repeatable services and products.

That is where a freelancer can start becoming a micro-company.

The difference is significant.

A freelancer often asks, “How much should I charge for my time?”

A micro-company asks, “What valuable result can I consistently deliver?”

AI can help make that transition possible by reducing the amount of repetitive work behind the service.

Marketing Without a Marketing Department

Marketing has traditionally been one of the biggest expenses for small businesses.

But a one-person entrepreneur can now use AI to help develop content calendars, customer personas, campaign ideas, headlines, email concepts, social-media captions and promotional variations.

The owner can also use AI to turn one piece of content into several formats.

A long article can become social posts. A product description can become advertising copy. A customer question can become an educational article. A presentation can become a series of short-form videos.

This creates an important principle for small businesses:

Don’t create more content. Create more value from the content you already have.

Of course, AI-generated material still needs human review. Brand voice, accuracy and local cultural context cannot simply be outsourced to a machine.

AI as a Research Assistant

Market research used to be expensive and time-consuming.

A small entrepreneur might struggle to analyze competitors, identify customer trends or organize large amounts of information.

AI can help accelerate the first stage of that process.

An entrepreneur can use it to organize publicly available information, compare product features, identify recurring customer concerns and generate questions that deserve deeper investigation.

This can be especially useful before launching a new product.

Instead of asking, “I have a great idea. How do I sell it?”, the entrepreneur can first ask:

“Who needs this? What problem does it solve? What alternatives already exist? What are customers complaining about?”

That is a much better starting point.

Even Administration Is Changing

AI’s potential isn’t limited to marketing.

One-person businesses can also use digital tools to organize invoices, categorize expenses, prepare basic financial summaries, draft quotations and proposals, and organize customer information.

For bookkeeping and tax compliance, however, AI should be treated as an assistant rather than a replacement for qualified professional advice.

The principle is simple:

Automate the routine. Review the important.

The entrepreneur should remain in control of financial records and business decisions.

The Website Can Become a Sales Assistant

A small business website used to require significant technical effort.

Today, AI-assisted tools can help entrepreneurs create website copy, organize product information, improve search-engine optimization, and generate frequently asked questions.

This matters because a website can work even when the owner is asleep.

A potential customer can discover the business through search, read about its services, review its portfolio and submit an inquiry.

For a one-person company, that is powerful.

Your business can continue marketing itself even when you are busy delivering the actual service.

The New Competitive Advantage: Leverage

The biggest advantage of AI may not be lower costs.

It may be leverage.

One entrepreneur with good systems can potentially accomplish work that previously required several people.

That does not mean businesses should avoid hiring.

In fact, AI can help entrepreneurs determine when hiring becomes worthwhile.

If a task is repetitive, automate or streamline it.

If it requires judgment, relationships, creativity or specialized expertise, keep humans deeply involved.

And when the business grows beyond what one person can reasonably manage, hire people to expand capability—not simply to compensate for inefficient processes.

The Filipino Entrepreneur and the AI Opportunity

This is particularly relevant to the Philippines, where micro, small and medium enterprises make up the overwhelming majority of businesses and provide livelihoods to millions of Filipinos.

The government’s growing focus on digitalization and AI-powered MSME development reflects the recognition that technology can help smaller enterprises become more productive and competitive.

For Filipino entrepreneurs, the opportunity is not simply to adopt AI because it is fashionable.

It is to ask:

“What business problem can AI help me solve?”

Maybe it is reducing the time spent creating proposals.

Maybe it is answering repetitive customer inquiries.

Maybe it is analyzing sales data.

Maybe it is creating marketing content.

Maybe it is researching a new market.

Start with the problem, not the technology.

Don’t Build a Business Around AI. Build a Business With AI.

There is also a warning worth remembering.

AI makes it easier to produce things.

It does not automatically make those things valuable.

Anyone can generate a social-media post. Anyone can create a business plan. Anyone can ask AI for a logo concept.

The competitive advantage will increasingly come from what the entrepreneur knows, how well they understand customers and how effectively they use AI to turn that knowledge into value.

Human experience still matters.

Trust still matters.

Reputation still matters.

And customers still want to deal with people who understand their problems.

AI simply gives that person more tools.

The Micro-Company Is Just Getting Started

The one-person business of the future may look very different from the traditional small business.

There may be no office. No large administrative department. No full-time marketing team.

Instead, there may be one entrepreneur, a laptop or smartphone, cloud-based systems, digital platforms and a collection of AI assistants helping with different parts of the operation.

That entrepreneur can research in the morning, create a proposal before lunch, meet a customer in the afternoon and manage marketing in the evening—with technology handling much of the repetitive work in between.

That is not the end of entrepreneurship.

It may be the beginning of a more accessible form of it.

For someone who has always dreamed of starting a business but worried about the cost of hiring a team, AI changes the equation.

You may not need a big company to start.

You need a useful idea, a real customer problem, the discipline to build a sustainable business—and the willingness to learn how to use the tools now available.

Because the next generation of successful entrepreneurs may not necessarily be the ones with the biggest teams.

They may be the ones who know how to make one person work like a company.

Industry Daily Observer | Happiest Pinoy Wins Stevie® for Celebrating the Strength of the Filipino Spirit

Happiest Pinoy, Cebuana Lhuillier’s flagship advocacy celebrating Filipino resilience, optimism, and joy, has been named a Bronze Stevie® Winner for Achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility at the 23rd Annual International Business Awards®.

Across online platforms, people celebrate the moments that make life meaningful, like family milestones and personal wins to simple acts of kindness.

Copycats, Not Competitors: Fake Lending Apps Are Becoming a Consumer-Trust Problem

MANILA, Philippines — In the rapidly expanding world of digital finance, legitimate online lenders are not only competing for borrowers. Increasingly, they are also having to protect consumers from something that looks like competition but is anything but: fake applications, copycat websites and social-media accounts that imitate established lending brands.

The issue has gained renewed attention following the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) August 20, 2026 advisory warning the public about unauthorized online lending platforms (OLPs), mobile applications and websites.

The SEC said the platforms identified in its advisory are not recorded with the Commission as authorized OLPs and are therefore not permitted to offer or provide loans to the public. More significantly for legitimate lenders, the regulator separately identified several applications and websites that allegedly impersonate established lending and financing companies by copying their names, logos, brands or identities.

For legitimate digital lenders, the development points to a problem that extends beyond any single company or application: when consumers cannot easily tell the difference between a regulated financial service and an impersonator, trust in the entire digital-lending ecosystem can suffer.

Digital finance is becoming mainstream

The timing is significant because digital financial services are no longer a niche part of the Philippine economy.

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), 57.4% of total monthly retail payments in the Philippines were digital in 2024, up from 52.8% in 2023. The central bank said the figure surpassed the country’s 2024 digital-payment target under the Philippine Development Plan.

Credit demand is also substantial. The BSP reported that consumer loans of universal and commercial banks reached approximately ₱3.1 trillion in March 2026, with consumer loans accounting for about 20% of their total loan portfolio.

The BSP’s 2025 Financial Stability Report likewise noted that consumer loans had reached 12.8% of GDP by September 2025, while unsecured borrowings increased 31.6% year-on-year to ₱1.7 trillion.

These numbers illustrate why digital credit and consumer finance have become increasingly important to the country’s financial ecosystem.

They also explain why the online lending sector is an attractive target for bad actors.

The copycat problem

A fake lending application does not necessarily need to invent an unfamiliar brand.

In some cases, the more effective strategy is to make an unauthorized platform look familiar.

A copied name, a similar logo, a Facebook page designed to resemble an official account, or an application with branding almost identical to a legitimate lender can create enough familiarity to convince a borrower that the platform is genuine.

The SEC’s August 20 advisory specifically called attention to this practice.

Alongside a list of unauthorized lending applications and websites, the regulator identified several platforms that it described as fake or impersonating legitimate lending brands, including the popular OLPs. The advisory also identified fake applications associated with other established lending brands.

For consumers, the distinction is critical.

A borrower who encounters a fake application may reasonably assume that any subsequent loan offer, fee, collection practice, or data request is coming from the company whose brand has been copied.

The legitimate company, however, may have had nothing to do with the transaction.

When the borrower cannot tell who is really lending

This is where impersonation becomes more than a branding problem.

It becomes a consumer-protection problem.

International regulators have repeatedly warned about deceptive online credit offers. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns consumers about advance-fee loan scams in which fraudsters promise access to credit but demand payment first for supposed processing, insurance, or other fees. The FTC advises consumers to verify whether a lender is properly registered and to avoid paying for a guaranteed promise of credit.

The FTC has also taken enforcement action against digital credit providers over allegedly deceptive representations about cash advances, fees and cancellation practices, demonstrating that consumer-protection concerns around app-based credit are not limited to one country or one business model.

In January 2026, the FTC separately warned consumers about fake loan text messages, noting that scammers may use unsolicited messages to trick people into providing personal or financial information.

The broader lesson is clear: the digital interface may look legitimate even when the person behind it is not.

Why copycats can distort perceptions of legitimate lending

One of the less discussed consequences of impersonation is its potential impact on consumer perception.

A borrower who encounters an unauthorized platform may not remember the precise corporate identity behind it. What they may remember is that they used an “online lending app.”

If that experience involves unexpected charges, unclear loan terms, aggressive communications or questionable requests for personal information, the resulting distrust can extend beyond the fake platform itself.

That creates a difficult environment for legitimate lenders.

Responsible lenders invest in compliance, disclosure, customer support, cybersecurity, data protection and transparent loan documentation. Yet those investments can be difficult for consumers to see when an unauthorized application is deliberately designed to look almost identical to a legitimate one.

The result is an information imbalance: legitimate lenders have to explain who they are, while copycats can simply borrow someone else’s identity.

Pricing transparency matters

Loan pricing is another area where the distinction between legitimate and unauthorized lending becomes important.

The SEC has established rules and regulatory mechanisms governing lending and financing companies, including requirements concerning disclosures and the implementation of interest-rate and other fee ceilings. The Commission implemented interest-rate caps for loans offered by covered lending and financing companies and their online lending platforms in 2022.

The regulatory framework exists precisely because borrowers need to understand what they are agreeing to.

That is fundamentally different from an unauthorized operator that can present whatever terms it chooses while operating outside the regulatory framework.

The problem, therefore, is not simply whether one particular loan appears expensive.

The bigger issue is whether the borrower can identify the lender, understand the total cost of credit, and know which regulator or company is accountable for the transaction.

Data protection is equally important

Digital lending also involves another valuable asset: consumer data.

A legitimate financial application may require information for identification, credit assessment, fraud prevention, account management and other legitimate purposes. But the same digital environment can create opportunities for bad actors to collect information under pretenses.

The World Bank has highlighted data-protection and privacy risks associated with digital financial services, noting that mobile-based financial applications can potentially access information such as contacts, SMS and location data and that different providers may operate under different supervisory regimes.

The World Bank’s more recent work on responsible digital credit also points to the importance of privacy rules, consumer consent, limitations on data use and cooperation among financial, consumer-protection and data-protection authorities. It specifically notes Philippine safeguards concerning the processing of personal data for loans, including restrictions designed to prevent abusive collection practices such as harassment and shaming.

For consumers, that means the question should not simply be:

“Can this app give me a loan?”

It should also be:

“Who is behind this app, what information am I giving them, and who is accountable for how that information is used?”

A regional problem, not just a Philippine one

The Philippines is not alone in facing the challenge.

INTERPOL’s ASEAN Cyberthreat Assessment has identified loan and banking-related phishing scams among common scam categories in the region, alongside social-media impersonation and other forms of online deception. The report also noted that criminals increasingly use technology, fake reviews and other techniques to make fraudulent operations appear credible.

More recent international enforcement efforts demonstrate that fraudulent mobile lending is an evolving global problem.

In an INTERPOL-supported cybercrime operation conducted across 16 African countries from December 2025 to January 2026, authorities targeted networks involved in online scams, including fraudulent mobile loan applications. The operation resulted in 651 arrests and investigations linked to more than US$45 million in reported financial losses involving 1,247 victims.

While the circumstances differ from those in the Philippines, the underlying lesson is relevant: mobile lending fraud is increasingly part of a broader digital-fraud ecosystem that crosses platforms and borders.

Regulation helps — but verification remains essential

The Philippine SEC has continued to strengthen its oversight of lending and financing companies.

Its current lending-company regulatory resources include an official list of recorded OLPs, advisories and notices, complaints mechanisms and enforcement actions. In 2025 alone, the SEC announced actions involving unauthorized lending operations as well as the revocation or cancellation of licenses and registrations of numerous lending and financing companies.

The Commission has also introduced updated procedures for the disclosure and recording of OLPs through the SEC iMessage Portal in 2026, reflecting the continuing evolution of the regulatory framework.

These measures matter because a functioning digital-credit market depends on something more fundamental than convenience: accountability.

The borrower should know who the lender is.

The lender should be identifiable.

The terms should be disclosed.

And there should be a regulator and a legitimate company that consumers can approach when something goes wrong.

What legitimate lenders can do

The rise of copycat applications creates a shared responsibility for the industry.

Legitimate lenders can help by making their official channels easy to identify, maintaining consistent branding, educating borrowers about fake applications and promptly reporting impersonation attempts.

App marketplaces and social-media platforms can also play an important role by strengthening verification, responding quickly to reports of impersonation and making it more difficult for fraudulent accounts to reproduce established financial brands.

Regulators, meanwhile, can continue strengthening information-sharing and enforcement mechanisms so that suspicious platforms can be identified and acted upon more quickly.

For consumers, the first line of defense remains surprisingly simple: pause before downloading or submitting information.

Check the company’s identity.

Check the application’s developer.

Check the official website.

Check the SEC’s list of recorded OLPs.

And when in doubt, contact the legitimate company through an independently verified channel.

The opportunity is significant. BSP data shows that digital transactions are becoming increasingly embedded in everyday Philippine commerce, while consumer borrowing continues to expand.

The challenge is ensuring that bad actors do not undermine that progress by making consumers afraid of the very digital financial services designed to improve access and convenience.

The real competition is trust

The online lending industry’s long-term competition will not be decided solely by who can offer an application faster or process a loan more conveniently.

It will also be determined by who consumers can trust.

Copycat applications undermine that trust by making identity itself difficult to verify.

That is why the SEC’s latest advisory should be viewed not simply as another list of unauthorized applications, but as part of a larger effort to establish clearer boundaries between legitimate digital finance and fraudulent activity.

For responsible lenders, those boundaries are important.

For consumers, they can be the difference between making an informed financial decision and unknowingly handing personal information to an unauthorized operator.

And for the digital lending industry as a whole, protecting those boundaries is not merely a regulatory obligation.

It is a prerequisite for sustainable growth.
